If I Could Start Over...
Having a few years of homeschooling under my belt now, I can honestly say I have very few regrets. As I reflect on the past few years, we’ve had way more successes than failures; and way more times of excitement than disappointment. All glory goes to God for everything! What little success we’ve had came only through HIM! If, however, there was one thing that I could change, it would be my tendency to move too quickly.
By nature, I’m the type of person that hates seeing things undone or incomplete. My solution for that is to work as quickly and efficiently as I can, simply to get the task done. And don’t talk to me when I’m in the “zone” of getting something done. I have no time to talk! That can be a good thing in some situations, but it has been a fault at times in how I teach our children. For example, I will plan out EXACTLY how many lessons need to be done in a week so we can be DONE with the textbook by a certain time. Silly me. Little did I know, all of my quick moving and desire to leave nothing incomplete didn’t necessarily mean my children were “getting it.” That proved to be true more than once. I was so focused on mastering and finishing a task that I failed to nurture and guide our children through the learning process.
Aren’t you thankful for God’s grace? I know I am! We can’t go back and we can’t start over, but we CAN make changes, starting as early as today. Please don’t allow the mistakes you’ve made in your homeschool journey to distract or discourage you. We all make mistakes…and guess what…we will make even more in the future. I admonish you to press forward even when it seems like things are not working. Our Lord is indeed faithful and he NEVER makes mistakes.
